Upgrade procedure for phpBB2

Submitted by on November 1, 2007 – 11:09 am 33 Comments

The following is an example procedure for upgrading phpBB2 bulletin board software running under Linux. This procedure allows to retain forum customization.

phpBB2 Logo

  1. Download “Changed files only” package from http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php
  2. Tar cvf and gzip the entire phpBB2 installation directory on your server. This way you can alway undo any stupid mistakes you are about to fatfinger.
  3. Disable the board: login as admin -> phpBB Administration Panel -> General Admin -> Configuration -> Disable Board: Yes -> Submit. In the Administration Panel click “Preview Forum” to make sure the forum is disabled.
  4. In the Administration Panel -> General Admin -> Backup Database -> Full Backup: Gzip compress: yes. Append current timestamp to the backup file and save it in a secure location.
  5. Gunzip the “changed files only” package and untar it into the main phpBB2 installation folder. At the bottom of the Administration Panel note the current version of your existing phpBB2 installation. Extract the corresponding *.tar file.
  6. Delete all *.tar files. Chown -R wwwrun:www (or whatever userid your Apache runs under) everything in the phpBB2 folder.
  7. In your browser open http://domain.com/phpBB2_root_folder/install/update_to_latest.php to upgrade the database. Follow the instructions on the upgrade page.
  8. Delete “install” and “contrib” folders!
  9. Log in to the Administration Panel and check version information. Your installation should be up to date.
  10. Do another backup of your database (see step #4 above). Do NOT overwrite the backup file you created in step #3. Rename it instead.
  11. Re-enable the board (reverse step #3 above) and post a test message.

I am looking for a cost-effective, PHP/MySQL or .NET solution that can be use for a 3-star hotel project I am about to commence.
I would like one with a very simple Administration Panel that can be managed by anyone with minimal training.
Recommendations are fine but something that has been tried an tested by a web designer/developer will be highly appreciated.

    Thank you.

now that so many people are fitting Solar Panels to take advantage of the Feed in Tariff of 43.3p per Kw produced..how much of my Electricity Bill is going towards those people who have solar panels installed..some people ar making nearly £2000 per year now with a 3.8kw system..& the Energy companies HAVE to pay out for this..Ultimately we all are paying for this thru our energy bills..

Since the Bush Administration the dollar is worth less than half of what the value was. This means if you are making 15 bucks an hour now… it’s worth only a few bucks an hour ten years ago.

I want to add the volume control in the task bar, but the school computer won’t let me. There’s a way that I know of the get to the control panel to get volume back. The problem is that I don’t know where the icon for the control panel is. I looked when I pressed the start button, but it was no where to be found. Is there a button or two on the keyboard that can access the control panel? Tips?

Doesn’t the US taxpayer deserve to know what happened with the $535 million Obama gave away?

We are in charge of a few pages of our website and were given our own username and password. However, I don’t see the themes section on the administration panel. Is there a way to override the default theme (I’m assuming it’s editing the html code) for our few pages?

I have to say that I’m not very in tune with politics so I really don’t know what’s going on (i’m 17).

I know that this is a pretty big debate going on but I really don’t understand what people don’t like?

What plans does Obama’s administration have for the heathcare plan and what is causing all this uproar?

  • MAK & CHEESE says:

I have a computer at home I know all the passwords to all the accounts. I’ve tried going to control panel and changing my account to administrator, but it doesn’t work is there any other way that I can change my account into administrator?

  • Marshal says:

    Court: Obama appointments are unconstitutional

President Barack Obama violated the Constitution when he bypassed the Senate to fill vacancies on a labor relations panel, a federal appeals court panel ruled Friday.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said that Obama did not have the power to make three recess appointments last year to the National Labor Relations Board.

The unanimous decision is an embarrassing setback for the president, who made the appointments after Senate Republicans spent months blocking his choices for an agency they contended was biased in favor of unions.

But but but Obama is so intellectual and so highly educated that he taught Constitutional law, how in the world could he make this simpleton mistake?

The tax hike will be created by 5 new taxes added by the Obama administration coupled with the expiration of the “Bush” tax breaks.

What if it was more out of negligence? What if he/she (professor) relied upon one of those plagiarism programs that are known to give false positives. What if the student’s argument could be concretely proven? What if the accusation was damaging to the student’s reputation among the other faculty/administration?

how have the Republicans been allowed to do this

  • Alex says:

Now what kind of complete BS is this. Any Senator Pub or Dem that votes
aganist the pending Debt Bill will be permanently barred from being on the

be abolished before it ever gets started.

Could it be that Obama is counting on the shift of health care costs to state Medicaid, Medicare and the Veterans Administration to send everyone running to the federal government to clamor for a public health option? Is that a good or bad thing? What’s happening with Euro care in this global financial crisis? What about Canada care?

Sure, Jimmy Carter’s administration was a mess.

But solar energy was a legitimately good idea.

Why did Reagan remove the solar panels (at TAXPAYER EXPENSE, no less…) that Carter had previously installed on top of the White House?

    What was the point?

What did Reagan actually do to decrease America’s dependency on Mideast oil – anythng?

  • dealy says:

First the Head Coach resigned due to differences with the administration body and now the entire Selection panel has been disbanded.

  • Scott W says:

Let’s try this again, it didn’t show up the first time…

Please only answer this if you agree that AGW is real, is likely to be harmful, and could be slowed or stopped by most of the following methods (or, at least, are willing to pretend that you do). This is for people looking for real solutions, not the “it’s all a hoax” crowd.

In broad outline, I only see a few basic ways to deal with AGW:

    1. Carbon taxes. Apply a tax and/or tariff on fossil carbon, and/or anything made using fossil carbon.

    2. Cap-and-trade, or something similar. Restrictions on CO2 emissions from fossil sources (and other greenhouse gas emissions), preferably with some provisions to let low-producing companies sell or trade their excess allotment to high-producing companies to reduce overall economic damage, but without requiring any specific pattern or type of CO2 reductions (eg banning a particular fuel)

    3. Direct behavioral regulation. As people are unlikely to voluntarily make major lifestyle changes in large enough quantity without something directly pushing them, this would be either a. incentives for desired behaviors (for example, tax cuts for installing solar panels), or b. laws restricting specific undesirable behaviors (for example, limiting the sale of cars). It could also involve either i. end consumers (for example, regulating miles driven by individual citizens), or ii. businesses (for example, requiring power companies to phase out coal power plants).

    4. Geoengineering. Targeted, man-made efforts to capture excess atmospheric CO2, and/or reduce global warming in other ways (for example, by increasing albedo)

    5. Adaptation. Rather than slowing or stopping AGW, adjust our lifestyles, city locations, agriculture, transit, et cetera to tolerate new conditions. This would likely involve massive migrations away from new deserts, flooded coasts, and the like, and might also involve draconian population control measures to limit humanity to the Earth’s new carrying capacity.

What do you think are the potential merits or flaws of any or all of the various approaches? Which approach or approaches do you favor? Did I miss any?
