I need to know, the reviews I’ve been hearing are terrible but all I care about is the sound quality. I am simply going to hook it up to a boxee box and use just that device. I know people bought the device for $300 and hated it, but for $130 is it a good deal?
I really just want to hook up via optical and that’s it.

I have to get onto my online class, and I can get on the online school website and log in, but I can’t load the actual class page.
I’m not using a proxy.

My goal is to get rid of cable TV, keep my cable internet, and somehow hook up my computer to my living room TV set so I can watch a show from the internet on my nice TV screen while on the couch. What do I need to get to do this? A slingbox or what?

I understand the frustration of knowing “sound doesn’t work” and needing to figure out “why”. I haven’t used SPIDF in many years, my audio runs over HDMI and was plug and play.

BoxeeBox is 100M I believe so make sure your switch is negotiating 100/full.

Over NAS your source (file) is static, therefore your streaming will be static, their is no mechanism to adapt the source rate. You would need to run through 3rd party software to take care of this, but over a 100M LAN this shouldn’t be an issue.

Perhaps SPDIF setup is a one-time thing, but many people don’t even know what SPDIF is. All they know is that their sound is not working. It would have been a simple task for Boxee developers to come up with an automatic configuration utility instead of wasting time on cosmetic improvements of dubious aesthetics.

Buffering NAS data is definitely an issue with Boxee Box. I use wired gigabit and I verified good connection performance. Boxee Box has static buffering: it does not seem to adapt to the data throughput. Another possibility is that Boxee Box is just having issues playing 1080p MKVs that use certain types of compression.

Boxee is my second favorite after the player I built. And, as I said before, Boxee is certainly the best on the market for the money. But the latest software upgrade they pushed out is buggy as hell.

SPDIF – One time setup, not a big deal

Remote. I agree it is a no brainer to have bumps on the up button or something. I quickly got used to feeling for the Boxee logo at the bottom of the remote. Otherwise my remote has been flawless. I have had zero problems with it not responding in over a year. I suspect both units had this problem? Not good.

Buffering NAS data hasn’t been an issue for me either. I use wired, maybe your inconsistency is the result of wireless? Don’t give up on the Boxee, I have tried a number of other hardware solutions over the years, Boxee is my favorite!
